Irish commitment rings can keep Irish eyes smiling

If you think of Ireland the kind of images that usually come to mind are green hills with dairy cattle grazing, Dublin public houses and Irish traditional music and dancing, but if you are someone who appreciates fine jewelry another image might well come to mind – Irish commitment rings.

 

These rings are also called friendship or promise rings. They are designed to be bought in pairs by two people who wish to give each other a lasting memento of the strong connection they have established.

The decision to exchange rings may be made due to some change in circumstances that is going to lead to a prolonged separation, or it might simply be a result of feeling that this relationship is so precious to both parties that they want to say thank you to each other in this most demonstrative of ways.

 

So why do we refer to Irish commitment rings instead of Polish or Italian rings? The answer takes us back over three hundred years to a little fishing village in the west of Ireland named Claddagh.

 

An enterprising local goldsmith called Richard Joyce created a ring with an image of two hands clasping a heart with a crown placed above the heart as a gift for his beloved. Various interesting local tales suggest that Joyce picked up his brilliant jewelry idea during a period he spent as a captive of a gang of Algerian pirates, while others have claimed that the idea came through a family connection between the Joyce’s and Spain where similar rings were produced.

 

The symbolic language of this design clearly suggests the theme of fidelity and this theme has proved to be very appealing. Whatever the origins of the first of the Irish commitment rings, the idea of exchanging such rings has become popularized to an extent that Mr. Joyce could never have imagined.

 

Today the Claddagh design has become an iconic friendship ring. It is available in a range of materials, including both base and precious metals. There are a number of variants on this pattern, combining jewels with precious metals. For example, it has become popular to have a gemstone associated with the month of birth inserted into the ring in the shape of a heart.

 

In addition to the Claddagh friendship rings, jewelry designers have also looked to traditional Irish art for inspiration. Thus you can also have rings made with Celtic love knots patterns and rings inscribed with Gaelic expressions such as “gra go deo” (love forever).
